January 2008 Trips

January 4, 2008

Water Level: 1.488m

Water Flow: Unavailable

Air Temperature: +4

My good friend Quinn and I headed down to the Bow River today for our first outing of 2008. The weather started out very pleasant but a brisk wind later in the afternoon cooled things down considerably and made for difficult casting at times. Quinn held the hot hand today landing 4 rainbows, a brown and a whitefish on a size 16 evil weevil and losing several others. I had no luck today and only managed to hook one great looking rainbow which I was unable to land. Most of the fish hooked today were holding in slower, deep water. Read more »

Fishing for Rainbows at McKinnon Flats

September 29

Since the end of August, I've been back at school teaching so getting out for a day long drift on the Bow River is now a rare treat. I have tried to get out wading the Bow one or two times a week and have enjoyed that. Today my friend, John, and I drifted from Policeman's Flats to McKinnon Flats. We landed several smaller fish and three 16 to 18 inch rainbows. Fish were taking worm patterns and small lightning bug patterns. It has definitely cooled down the last few weeks and fall is certainly in the air but today was very pleasant while the sun was out and we had a very enjoyable day.

Foursome Spend the Day Fishing Dryflies

September 3

I had a very enjoyable day with Chris and Becky who are up from from Montana. The weather was perfect today; not too hot, calm most of the day, with skies that were overcast. Like Peter and Jeff, Chris and Becky are partial to fishing dryflies so we fished caddis and mayfly dries with smaller nymph droppers pretty well all day. Again today we landed a good number of smaller rainbows but also enjoyed seeing several larger fish landed which was a nice change from the previous two days. Read more »

From Upstate to Calgary to Fernie for Fishing!

September 1 & 2

Peter and Jeff arrived in Calgary from upstate New York last week and headed down to Fernie to fish the Elk River and a couple of its tributaries for a few days. A stop was also made on the Oldman River before finishing up with two days on the Bow River. Both days on the Bow were spent fishing dry flies with droppers for the majority of the time. A lot of small rainbows were landed with only one larger fish landed each day. This beauty took an elk hair caddis and gave Peter a great fight before it was finally landed. Read more »

Fishing the Elk, Crowsnest and the Oldman rivers

August 22, 2007

Chris and Dave are finishing up several days of fishing in the Calgary area that saw them on the Elk, the Crowsnest and the Oldman rivers. They wanted to get on the Bow for a couple of days before heading back home so today we drifted from Policeman's Flats to McKinnon Flats. Fishing was great today and we got off to a quick start with a couple of fish taking foam hoppers right away. Both Chris and Dave were impressed early on with the fight of our rainbow trout. The fish hit foam flies for a good part of the morning. During the afternoon, we had many opportunities to throw elk hair caddis to rising fish and landed several big fish and lost many others. Nearly all the fish we landed until late in the afternoon were in the 18+ inch range and as we got into early evening all we landed were smaller rainbows and one or two smaller browns. A few larger trout began taking flies again later in the evening. I'm not sure how many fish were landed today but this was one of the better days my clients have had on the Bow this summer. Chris and Dave will be on the Bow again tomorrow but I'm off to Waterton National Park for a few days with my wife.

Final Royal Canadian Pacific Fly Fishing train trip

August 17 - August 20

I guided John and his wife, Bonnie on the second and final Royal Canadian Pacific Fly Fishing train trip of the season. Day one was a slow day on the Bow with only a couple of fish landed. Day two saw us on an Oldman River walk and wade which got of to a great start as we threw flies to rising cutthroat trout. Things quickly slowed down and we ended up finishing off the day on the Crowsnest River. Read more »

Corporate Fishing Trip on the Bow

August 16

Today's outing was a 6 boat corporate trip for a company out of Saskatchewan. All of our clients were new to fly fishing and all had a great evening on our four hour drift from Grave's Landing to Fish Creek Park. The weather was perfect and caddis flies were on the water for much of the drift. Juliana spent the evening in my boat and caught on to fly fishing very quickly. Her first ever fish on a fly rod was this fat Rocky Mountain white fish, taken on a bead head prince nymph, that she played perfectly. Juliana followed up this catch with a nice sized rainbow trout taken on an elk hair caddis. We had a few more hits and two or three more fish on before our evening on the Bow ended as the sun was setting.

Drifting along the Bow

August 11

Eric and his father, Wes, are in Calgary from California for a day and wanted to drift the Bow before heading to the Elk River for a few more days of fishing. Their plan originally was to spend a day on the Livingstone River but the trunk road along the Livingstone is still closed due to the extreme fire hazard. The weather today was much improved and and it was much more pleasant drifiting from Policeman's Flats to McKinnon Flats under sunny skies. This section of the Bow was a little slower than it was earlier in the week but we still enjoyed some good fishing action. Today we landed fish on a zebra midge, the San Juan worm, a caddis larva, and a parachute Adams. The highlight of the day had to be stopping to fish for a big rainbow slurpping flies along a foam line. Eric fished for close to 15 minutes before the fish finally took the hook. Unfortunately one of the hooks got snagged and the fish got loose. Both Eric and Wes lost a couple of very nice fish that looked to be well over 20". Read more »

Week Long Fishing Trips along the Bow

August 7, 2007,

I had a very enjoyable day fishing the Bow River with my sister, Carolyn, and her husband, Rick who stopped in on their way back home to Regina. Conditions were perfect; it has cooled down significantly, skies were overcast most of the day, the Bow has really cleared up, and there seemed to be fewer weeds floating loose in the river. The fish were really active today and we had a lot of really good sized fish on and landed a couple of browns and several rainbows. San Juan worms and caddis larva took a lot of fish today.ay to end a very enjoyable four days. If you enjoy fishing for cutthroat trout in a spectacular setting, the Elk is a river you will want to check out. Read more »

Fishing the Crowsnest with Visitors from Yellowknife

August 21

Austin is in town from Yellowknife, NWT, and was joined by his son Sean and Matt. I lived in Yellowknife for many years as well so it was great to catch up on what is happening in the north. Neither Sean nor Matt had fly fished before so we thought it might be fun to introduce them to the sport on a smaller piece of water so we headed to the Oldman River. The fishing was very slow with only a bull trout landed on the Oldman so we headed down to the Crowsnest River hoping for an evening caddis hatch. We weren't disappointed as there was a very busy hatch that saw the guys casting to many rising fish. All three caught fish and we headed back to the 4Runner as the sun was setting over the mountains to the west. Read more »
