While Dave (Calgary) is an avid Bow River spin fisher, he had never fly fished before, and was eager to get out and give fly fishing a try on our mountain rivers. Joining him was Will (Ontario) who was new to the sport as well. With run-off and recent rains, we were uncertain as to the condition of the rivers and although the rivers were running high, the water was gin clear and we if we picked our spots, we were able wade across the rivers in several locations.

A strong wind arrived and chased us into the mountains and further upstream on the Oldman. Our next stop was the Livingstone River where the fish were much more active. wills-brown-troutWe had several hook ups on dries and nymphs and landed a whitefish and a cutty. Dave also had a bull trout on that managed to shake loose. Before heading back to Calgary, we made one more stop further downstream on the Oldman River. Our day ended on the Bow River where we hoped to hit a caddis hatch at sunset. There were a few caddis and the fish were certainly active for awhile. We had a lot of fun casting to rising trout, and while we did have several hits, only Will was able to land a fiesty brown. All in all it was a fantastic day to be out on the water with a couple of great guys who definitely plan on getting into fly fishing in the future.
