August 7, 2007,
I had a very enjoyable day fishing the Bow River with my sister, Carolyn, and her husband, Rick who stopped in on their way back home to Regina. Conditions were perfect; it has cooled down significantly, skies were overcast most of the day, the Bow has really cleared up, and there seemed to be fewer weeds floating loose in the river. The fish were really active today and we had a lot of really good sized fish on and landed a couple of browns and several rainbows. San Juan worms and caddis larva took a lot of fish today.ay to end a very enjoyable four days. If you enjoy fishing for cutthroat trout in a spectacular setting, the Elk is a river you will want to check out.

One of the difficulties with guiding is the fact that it can be hard to find the time to get out and spend a day fishing with friends. This week has been good that way as today I got out again for a day of fun fishing on the Bow River with John J, who is in town visiting and fishing with Quinn, a good friend of mine. Today was a cool, damp, overcast day and it was actually quite chilly when we got started this morning. It turned out to be a great day of fishing as the fish were very eager to take our flies and fought hard once they were hooked. Close to 20 fish were landed today and a few 20+ inch trout and many 17 to 19 inch trout were lost before we could get them to the boat. Again today, the worm and caddis larva were the hot flies. I'm hoping to get a few more days like this in before the season ends.

Colin and Kirk were in town from Abbotsford, BC and finished up business just in time to get on the Bow River at 3:30 for a full day drift. Weather-wise the afternoon and evening were pleasant enough inspite of the cool, overcast, and rainy conditions. The water had clouded up since yeterday due to last night's rain but visibility was just fine. We were a little rushed for time but still managed to spend a bit of time wading in a few choice locations. Colin landed several nice fish and it was great to see Kirk land a couple on his first outing with a fly rod. If you are driving into or out of McKinnon Flats in the next day or two take it easy as the section of road under construction is quite sloppy.

Robert is in town from Maryland and he and his younger brother, TomĀ joined me for a half day drift. Cool, overcast, and damp conditions continued, and it got quite windy for awhile, but we had a very enjoyable few hours drifting from Fish Creek Park to Policeman's Flats. Despite not having much of an opportunity to fly fish for trout near his hometown, Tom is a real fly fishing enthusiast and an eager fly tier. We got off to a great start this morning with Tom landing his first ever brown trout just minutes into the float. We had a number of hits and a few hook-ups but didn't land another fish until the end of the float when Tom landed one more brown.
