Opening Day for Oldman River

June 16, 2007,
Today was opening day for fishing on our mountain rivers and streams and as luck would have it, a weather advisory for heavy rainfall was in effect. After some hesitation, I loaded up the 4Runner and headed off to one of my favorite spots on the Oldman River. The weather was fine when I arrived but a storm was moving in over the mountains and after about 15 minutes of fishing in decent weather, the wind came up and it started to rain and hail. I managed to land two rainbows, two smaller bull trout, and one cutthroat trout before lightning forced me off the river.
The rainbow trout were caught on a size 16 prince nymph tied with Ice Dub in UV Brown while both bull trout and the cutthroat took a leach pattern. Even though we are in run-off from melting snow in the mountains and we have received a lot of rainfall this month, the Oldman was in much better condition than I anticipated and there was a good three feet of visibility. It would have been nice to have spent more time on the river but it was great to get back fishing in the mountains even if it was just for an hour and a half or so. I did a little exploring on the way home and if conditions permit next weekend, I hope to fish a stream I've driven by several times over the past couple of years.
