Oldman and Bow Rivers – Fishing Recap 3

July 18, 2006,

Scotty and Lynn, from Florida, are back in the area again for their third straight year. I had spent time with them the previous 2 years so this was a day I had been looking forward to for some time. They are hooked on our mountain streams so we headed out to spend a day on the Oldman River. I spent a lot of time with Lynn who enjoyed great success. Scotty also landed a number of fish and missed several as well. I was surprised to see how much the water level had dropped during the past week. Hopefully this doesn't continue.

Dan and Earl, and a couple of their business associates joined me and another guide on the Bow River today. Based on the previous three days I had spent on the Bow, and a forecast of 30 degree weather, I was a little apprehensive about how the day might go. Most of the fishers we saw today were nymphing while a few were throwing streamers. Most of our success came from the egg sucking leach patterns that we dead drifted below wire and chennile worms, stonefly nymphs, and smaller beadhead nymphs. We had no success with streamers. Another slow day. We landed three rainbows including this nice 22 incher, and one small brown while the other boat landed five fish. All of our fish were in great shape and were caught in seams in fast water today and that is the report I heard from another guide yesterday. Water levels on the Bow have dropped dramatically since I was on the river six days ago.

I enjoyed a day fishing with my son, Jeremy, and my cousin, Darren. We also arranged to meet up with Scotty and Lynn (see July 18) and spend some time fishing with them as well. We fished three different sections of the Oldman River today and had great success. Lots of fish and even more missed hits on dry flies and several caught on small nymph droppers as well. Another hot day today with temperatures in the 30 degree range.
